The Danger of Default Colors and the "Rainbow" Pitfall
One of the most common mistakes in amateur cartography and early geospatial analysis is the uncritical use of the "Rainbow" or "Jet" color map. Often seen as a vivid sequence moving rapidly from deep blue, through green, yellow, and finally to bright red, this palette is historically popular because it looks vibrant and complex on a digital screen. However, from a scientific and cognitive standpoint, it is profoundly flawed.
The human eye and brain do not perceive the transition between completely disparate hues (like blue to red) as a natural, linear progression of values. When looking at a map of Bangladesh, a bright green district next to a bright yellow district can create a false visual boundary that simply does not exist in the underlying data.
